Gilberto Mora has secured a place among the youngest players to participate in the World Cup.
The young Mexican national team player made history by appearing in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup against South Africa.
Mexico, co-hosting the tournament alongside the United States and Canada, defeated South Africa 2-0 in a match held Thursday evening at the Azteca Stadium.
Coach Javier Aguirre initially kept Mora on the bench but brought him on in the 66th minute, substituting him for teammate Brian Gutierrez.
According to statistics from the specialized network Opta, Mora became the youngest player to represent the host nation in World Cup history, playing at the age of 17 years and 240 days.
Youngest Players in World Cup History
French network Stats Foot ranked Mora as the sixth youngest player ever to appear in a World Cup match.
He follows five younger players: Irishman Norman Whiteside (17 years and 41 days), Cameroonian Samuel Eto'o (17 years and 99 days), Nigerian Femi Opabunmi (17 years and 101 days), Cameroonian Samuel Olumide (17 years and 185 days), and Brazilian Pelé (17 years and 235 days).
