Xavi Hernandez assumed complete responsibility for the Netherlands' lackluster start during their 2-2 Nations League match against Greece in Thessaloniki. The Spanish manager apologized directly to his squad at halftime, acknowledging that tactical choices and player selections contributed to the disjointed first-half display.

Halftime apology and tactical shift

Rather than expressing anger, Hernandez adopted a calm demeanor in the dressing room. He told NOS that the initial performance fell far below standards, stating, "The first half was really bad... It was important to create chances from the start, but we did nothing." The coach admitted there was insufficient intensity and ambition, attributing these failures to himself.

"Was I shouting in the dressing room? No, I was calm," Hernandez explained. "The players were a bit sad. 'Sorry, it was my fault,' I told the players at half-time. We had to change our mentality." This honest assessment preceded a decisive triple substitution at the break.

Substitutions rescue valuable point

Hernandez withdrew Quinten Timber, Guus Til, and Ruben van Bommel, bringing on Tijjani Reijnders, Ryan Gravenberch, and Noa Lang. These changes immediately altered the game's momentum, allowing the visitors to control the tempo and dictate play in the second half.

The Oranje managed to snatch a late equalizer, securing a hard-fought away result. Despite the comeback, Hernandez maintained high expectations, noting he is never satisfied with a draw. However, he expressed pride in the team's resilience and viewed the second-half improvement as a crucial building block for his tenure.

Looking ahead in Nations League

"I am never satisfied with a draw, but it is part of the process," Hernandez concluded. "We want to play like we did in the second half. I am happy with that. I have seen two faces, but this is just the beginning."

The Netherlands will aim to carry this renewed confidence into upcoming fixtures as Hernandez continues to shape the team according to his vision.
