Ferry Verbeek, Joshua Zirkzee’s former youth coach, told TuttoJuve the 25-year-old Dutch forward is “bound to” move to Juventus and would thrive there more than at Manchester United.

Twenty-five-year-old Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee is “bound to” join Juventus, according to Ferry Verbeek, his former youth-team coach. Speaking to TuttoJuve, Verbeek declared the Serie A club the ideal destination for the player’s development and long-term prospects.
Zirkzee arrived at Manchester United in summer 2024 after standout performances with Bologna. He had previously emerged from the Bayern Munich academy but did not secure a regular role at the Allianz Arena. A loan spell at Anderlecht preceded his transfer to Bologna in 2022; two years later, he completed the high-profile switch to the Premier League.
United signed him to bolster competition and depth behind Rasmus Hojlund. That plan shifted when Hojlund moved on loan to Napoli in 2025 and subsequently joined the Serie A side permanently. United then acquired Benjamin Sesko as their new central striker under Michael Carrick, leaving Zirkzee without a defined role in the squad.
Recent reports indicate Juventus are now actively interested in bringing Zirkzee back to Italy. Verbeek endorsed that path without reservation: “I’d almost say it’s bound to happen! He’s in his prime; Juventus would suit him better than Manchester United!”
Verbeek highlighted Zirkzee’s technical attributes and tactical flexibility. “Thanks to his technique and pace, he could prove to be a valuable asset,” he said. “It’s vital for him to play and build his confidence! His instinct and vision are formidable assets when it comes to finding the back of the net.”
When asked whether Zirkzee fits only the traditional centre-forward role, Verbeek responded: “Yes, but Joshua can play in any position in attack. If he wanted to, he could even play as an attacking midfielder, because he’s capable of holding up the ball and has the right eye for delivering excellent assists.”
Verbeek attributed Zirkzee’s lack of impact at Old Trafford largely to managerial circumstances. “There are so many factors at play that it’s difficult to say for certain, but the manager plays a key role: confidence and playing time can really give you wings. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen here.”
Zirkzee was signed by Erik ten Hag but failed to earn consistent minutes under him. His situation did not improve under Ruben Amorim, who took over in November 2024. After Amorim’s tenure yielded no sustained progress, Michael Carrick assumed temporary charge in January 2025 and later secured the role permanently — yet Zirkzee remained marginal throughout.
Verbeek recalled Zirkzee’s formative years, noting his precocious ability: “He was very young when I first met him, but even then he left people amazed by what he could do.”
He drew a stylistic parallel to Ruud Gullit: “Sometimes he pulled off moves that reminded me of Ruud Gullit: he dominated the pitch and called the shots! Of course, as a footballer he’s very different from Gullit (smiles – ed.).”
Zirkzee’s extended absence from United’s matchday squads reinforces speculation that a summer departure is imminent. Marcus Rashford, expected to remain at the club and capable of operating as a No. 9, may serve as cover for Sesko next season.
