Researchers observed that patients who engaged in aerobic exercise after completing cancer treatment experienced a 23% reduction in all-cause mortality compared to those who did not. They also faced a 17% lower risk of cancer recurrence prior to death. Additional outcomes included an 18% decrease in overall mortality risk and a 26% decline in cancer-specific mortality.
Recurrence rates remain high despite standard treatment
Cancer returns in between 20% and 40% of patients even after undergoing chemotherapy and surgical tumor removal, underscoring the need for effective adjunctive strategies.
Potential biological mechanisms
Published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, the review outlines several physiological pathways through which exercise may exert anti-cancer effects. These include enhanced cardiovascular system efficiency, stimulation of immune cell activity, and improved blood flow to tumors. Investigators also hypothesize that physical activity influences hormone levels—including estrogen and testosterone—and increases muscular glucose uptake. Additionally, exercise may support cellular DNA repair processes.
Breast cancer most represented in the evidence base
Breast cancer was the most frequently studied cancer type in the reviewed literature, followed by colorectal cancer and pancreatic cancer.
Michelle Mitchell, Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK, stated that the new evidence suggests exercise may help people diagnosed with cancer live longer and healthier lives. She emphasized the importance of ensuring survivors receive appropriate support to engage in physical activity when medically suitable.
Recommended activities and safety considerations
Aerobic exercises cited in the review include jogging, running, cycling, swimming, and dancing. Resistance-based activities covered include weightlifting, squats, and push-ups. However, individual capacity to perform exercise varies significantly depending on health status and prior treatment regimens.
