Each Extra Hour of Prolonged Sitting Linked to 9% Higher Cancer Death

A recent study published in the journal PLOS Medicine has found that prolonged sitting is associated with higher risks of developing cancer and dying from it. The research indicates that breaking up sedentary time with movement may mitigate those risks.

How Sitting Patterns Affect Cancer Outcomes

Researchers analyzed data from more than 91,000 participants in the UK Biobank study who had no prior cancer diagnosis at enrollment. Each participant wore an activity-monitoring device for seven days. Scientists then tracked their health outcomes for approximately 12 years.

The findings revealed that each additional daily hour spent in uninterrupted sitting was associated with a 9% increase in the risk of cancer-related death and a 3% rise in the risk of developing cancer.

Movement Breaks Show Significant Protective Effects

In contrast, interrupting sedentary periods with physical activity yielded measurable benefits. Every hour per day of sedentary time interrupted by movement correlated with an 18% lower risk of cancer mortality and a 6% reduction in overall cancer incidence.

Replacing one hour of prolonged sitting daily with light physical activity was similarly linked to a 12% decrease in cancer death risk and a 6% drop in cancer incidence risk.

What the Study Does and Does Not Establish

Fredrick Ho, an epidemiologist and lead author of the study from the University of Glasgow, noted that current public health guidelines emphasize moderate- to vigorous-intensity exercise. However, this study highlights the independent importance of light-intensity movement—such as brief walking breaks—to counteract the harms of extended sitting.

The study is observational and therefore does not establish a direct causal relationship between prolonged sitting and cancer. It identifies associations between sitting patterns and health outcomes, not proven mechanisms of causation.

The researchers conclude that the results contribute to a growing body of evidence underscoring the need to reduce sedentary behavior. They suggest that incorporating short, frequent bouts of movement throughout the day may represent a simple, accessible intervention—particularly for individuals whose work or lifestyle requires extended periods of sitting.
