Ebola Outbreak Claims 65 Lives in DR Congo
A new Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has resulted in 65 deaths and 246 suspected cases, with health authorities calling for an emergency meeting.

At least 65 people have died and 246 suspected cases of Ebola have been recorded in the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) announced on Friday. The agency confirmed the outbreak, with infections concentrated in the health zones of Mungualo and Rwampara, where four laboratory-confirmed deaths have occurred.
An emergency meeting involving the DRC, Uganda, South Sudan, and international partners will be convened by the Africa CDC, according to a statement. The goal is to strengthen cross-border surveillance and boost preparedness and response efforts. Concerns have been raised about the potential for wider spread, driven by the urban nature of the cities of Bunia and Rwampara, high population movement, and mining-related travel in the Mungualo area.
Virus Characteristics and Transmission
Ebola is a severe and often fatal illness, endemic to the vast tropical forests of the Congo. The virus spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals, touching contaminated materials, or handling the bodies of those who have died from the disease.
