Experts recommend five key food categories to ease fever symptoms and speed recovery, from warm broth to zinc-rich nuts.

When the body’s temperature rises due to flu, cold, or COVID-19, it signals the immune system fighting infection. Proper nutrition acts as a “first line of defense” to ease symptoms and accelerate recovery, according to Dr. Colleen Dorte.
Health experts, citing Verywell Health, have identified five essential food groups to focus on during fever episodes.
Warm soup is ideal for hydration and soothing a sore throat. Specialists advise avoiding heavy or cream-based soups, which are hard to digest, and instead choosing clear broths containing plant proteins like lentils and beans along with anti-inflammatory vegetables such as carrots and spinach.
Vitamin C fuels immune cells. Oranges, kiwis, berries, and bell peppers rank among the best sources for reducing viral severity and fighting internal inflammation caused by fever.
Studies show zinc is critical for immune cell function. It can be obtained from whole grains, nuts—especially cashews—and seeds like pumpkin and chia, helping the body combat infections more effectively.
Ginger is known for calming nausea and easing joint pain associated with fever. Research indicates garlic contains compounds capable of preventing the replication of certain viruses, including influenza.
Because the body loses fluids rapidly through sweating, doctors recommend fruits and vegetables with over 90% water content—such as watermelon, cucumber, and strawberries—to support continuous hydration and prevent dehydration.
The report emphasized monitoring sodium levels in processed foods and focusing on natural liquids like coconut water and herbal teas to supply the body with necessary energy without straining the digestive system.
