Innovative Spinach Extract Eye Drops Reduce Dry Eye Symptoms
Scientists developed eye drops using spinach extract that significantly lower oxidative stress and inflammation in dry eye syndrome patients.

Researchers have identified dry eye syndrome as one of the most common eye diseases worldwide, characterized by burning sensations, redness, a gritty feeling in the eye, and inflammation. To address this, scientists employed a mechanism similar to the photosynthesis process found in plants.
The team extracted thylakoids from spinach leaves—structures involved in photosynthesis—and incorporated them into specialized nanoparticles to create eye drops. When these drops enter the eye cells and are exposed to natural light, they initiate the production of NADPH molecules, which assist cells in combating oxidative stress and inflammation.
Experimental results revealed that after applying these eye drops and exposing the eyes to light for 30 minutes, harmful oxidant levels in the eye decreased significantly. Additionally, hydrogen peroxide concentration in the tears of patients with dry eye syndrome dropped by 95%. In laboratory tests on mice, the new eye drops demonstrated greater effectiveness than Restasis, a medication commonly prescribed for this condition.
The researchers suggest that this approach could potentially be applied in the future to treat other inflammatory diseases linked to cellular damage caused by reactive oxygen species in the body.
