Bakery Workers' Union Calls for Reversal of Bread Loaf Price Increase

President of the Beirut and Mount Lebanon Bakery Workers' Union, Shihab al-Masri, denounced the decision to increase the price of a bread loaf, stating in a statement that "the bread loaf is the backbone of food security and daily sustenance for the vast majority of the Lebanese people."

He argued that raising the price of the loaf amid the ongoing economic and living crisis "directly targets low-income individuals, workers, and the poor," emphasizing that "the bread loaf is a fundamental right to life."

He asked: "Who bears responsibility for the global rise in fuel prices—the government or the citizen?" Calling for an immediate reversal of the bread price increase and full accountability in supporting and protecting the bread of the poor.

He urged the creation of a clear and transparent plan to support fuel and flour supplies, activate oversight and auditing mechanisms, and halt policies that place the burden of crises, wars, corruption, and mismanagement on the shoulders of citizens.

Masri concluded with a call to "all relevant parties to fulfill their duty in securing food security for citizens," warning that Lebanese people "can no longer bear additional economic burdens under these current circumstances."
