Interior Minister Al-Hajjar Convenes Emergency Road Safety Meeting

Interior and Municipalities Minister Ahmed Al-Hajjar convened an emergency meeting of the National Road Safety Committee, attended by committee members, representatives from concerned ministries and administrations, and several associations and organizations active in road safety.

The session focused on assessing the current state of road safety and monitoring measures already adopted. Participants reviewed the implementation status of recommendations and plans aimed at reducing traffic accidents and addressing their root causes, strengthening compliance with road safety rules, and improving inter-ministerial, inter-administrative, and inter-agency coordination. Discussions also covered strategies to address high-risk accident locations, intensify public awareness campaigns on safe driving, and reinforce adherence to traffic signals and speed limits.

Rising accident rates drive urgent action

According to latest data released by the General Directorate of the Internal Security Forces, traffic accidents surged during the second half of this August: 40% were attributed to driver inattention, and 33% to excessive speed.

Minister orders full enforcement of traffic law

Al-Hajjar directed the General Directorate of the Internal Security Forces to complete implementation of the Traffic Law and to adopt all necessary procedures and measures to rigorously enforce traffic regulations—particularly those designed to enhance road safety and reduce accidents.

He stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility and called for a decisive shift from issuing recommendations to executing concrete actions. He emphasized the need for serious, firm application of safety measures and for road maintenance aligned with road safety requirements.

Al-Hajjar noted that while official agencies bear formal responsibility, citizens play an essential role. He urged drivers not to endanger their own lives or those of others, to comply fully with the Traffic Law, to cooperate with the Internal Security Forces and municipal police, and to strictly follow all traffic instructions.
