Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated on Sunday that the recent understandings reached constitute a "framework and not an agreement," stressing, "I am not fond of Israel, but give me another solution."

Speaking during a meeting with several journalists at Baabda Palace, as reported by the Lebanese channel Al-Jadeed, Aoun acknowledged facing criticism over this framework. He added, "I could stay in Baabda Palace and disregard any agreement, but should I let my people die? Should I watch these wars, the support provided, and all the destruction and bloodshed unfold?"

The president recounted an encounter during a visit to Saydet Harissa with a woman from Nabatieh who told him her house was completely destroyed. She said, "Mr. President, we do not want war; we want peace." Aoun said, "I am awaiting any solution or agreement that will take us out of wars."

Aoun affirmed the cohesion of the Lebanese army, rejecting any bets on its division. He said, "They are mistaken if they think otherwise," noting that the military institution continues to carry out its duties in combating drugs, maintaining security in the south and Beirut, and ensuring stability despite difficult circumstances.

He added, "No one can bet on the army's division; these are just dreams. The army belongs to all Lebanese, preserves security and stability, and will remain so."

The president declined to discuss the possibility of internal strife, stating that civil war is a thing of the past and emphasizing, "No one is capable of turning back the clock." He underscored that the Lebanese army is the guarantor of civil peace.

Regarding his upcoming visit to the United States, Aoun indicated that the trip remains scheduled. However, he is waiting to meet with the American ambassador to discuss various issues, including arrangements for the Washington visit.

These remarks come amid ongoing internal debate over the US-sponsored framework aimed at de-escalating tensions between Lebanon and Israel. Political divisions persist over the implementation mechanisms, particularly concerning security arrangements in the south and the enforcement of ceasefire provisions. International efforts continue to stabilize the situation and prevent renewed clashes along the Lebanese-Israeli border.
