US President Donald Trump said during a meeting with his Lebanese counterpart Joseph Aoun on Tuesday that Lebanon has suffered for decades, and that the United States will help it in the coming period, according to "Reuters".
Trump added, "It has been a place and a country that has been treated very badly, and we will work to ensure it is treated as it should be, with the respect it deserves."
He confirmed talks about the Lebanese army's control over villages from which Hezbollah militia is withdrawing, noting that Washington will look into issues related to the pilot phase of the safe zone project in Lebanon.
Regarding the Israeli military presence in Lebanon, Trump said in response to a question about the timing of the complete withdrawal of the Israeli army that Israeli forces "are in the process of doing so," explaining that they are "redeploying to other areas," and added that the two sides "are dealing well," describing the agreement signed with Lebanon as "a great agreement."
In context, Trump explained that "the Syrian president would like to do something with Hezbollah, and I think he will be effective in that."
During the meeting, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun praised Trump, telling him, "You are a great president," to which Trump jokingly replied, "He knows how to reach me, and he can get anything."
The Lebanese president thanked Trump for the historic achievement of signing the framework agreement, considering that Lebanon's return to stability and security is a matter of time.
The Israeli army announced on Monday the start of implementing "pilot zones" in southern Lebanon, under the framework agreement signed between Tel Aviv and Beirut, vowing firm measures against "any violation."
The Israeli army stated, in a statement, that the implementation comes "in cooperation with the US army and the Lebanese army."
It added that "as part of this experiment, teams from the Israeli army, the US army, and the Lebanese army are coordinating and planning for the continued implementation of the agreement."
