UNESCO welcomed the Lebanese Parliament’s adoption of a new media law, calling it a key step in modernizing Lebanon’s media legislation and strengthening freedom of expression, press freedom, and journalist safety.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) issued a statement welcoming the Lebanese Parliament’s approval of the country’s new media law. The organization described the law as “a significant milestone in Lebanon’s efforts to modernize its media legislation and strengthen freedom of expression, press freedom, and the safety of journalists.”
According to UNESCO, over recent years it supported Lebanon’s Ministry of Information in relaunching national consultations on media law reform. That support included providing technical and legal expertise and facilitating dialogue with national stakeholders. This assistance advanced the reform process and helped align the proposed legal framework with international standards and principles, contributing directly to the submission of the draft law to Parliament.
UNESCO welcomed specific provisions in the law aimed at fostering a safe and responsible media environment and countering incitement to hatred and violence. The organization emphasized that implementation of these provisions must respect freedom of expression, the right to access information, and journalist safety, in line with international human rights standards.
The organization extended congratulations to all actors who contributed to this pivotal reform. It reaffirmed its readiness to continue supporting Lebanon in implementing the new law and in reinforcing a media environment that is diverse, independent, pluralistic, and safe.
