Seth Rogen explained that Anne Hathaway left Knocked Up due to discomfort with a graphic childbirth scene, despite having started rehearsals.

Seth Rogen recently disclosed the reason behind Anne Hathaway's departure from the film Knocked Up, which she had initially been cast to star in. He revealed that Hathaway had already begun rehearsing but ultimately decided the project was not suitable for her.
During an appearance on The A24 Podcast with Olivia Wilde, Rogen addressed the rumors surrounding Hathaway’s exit. Wilde, who had auditioned for the female lead role, inquired whether Hathaway left because of the childbirth scene depicted in the film.
Rogen recalled that the disagreement stemmed from the film’s explicit “crowning” scene during childbirth. Although the scene would not have shown Hathaway’s own body, she was uncomfortable with the graphic portrayal and felt it did not align with her personal brand. Rogen noted that other factors might have influenced her decision but this was the explanation he received at the time.
He added that Hathaway trusted her instincts and made the choice she thought was best. “She had a sense, and she knew it was not for her,” Rogen said, also commenting that history has shown she has been right about many things over the years. He praised Katherine Heigl, who eventually assumed the role, calling her “great” and stating the casting ultimately worked out well.
Knocked Up, released in 2007, featured Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl portraying two strangers whose unexpected pregnancy brings them together. Directed by Judd Apatow, the comedy was both a critical and commercial success, grossing approximately $219 million worldwide on a reported $25 million budget. It later led to the 2012 sequel, This Is 40.
The film remains one of Rogen’s signature roles, holding a 90% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 85/100 Metascore, with IMDb users rating it 6.9/10, reflecting its enduring appeal to audiences and critics alike.
