Mother Mary, the latest film starring Anne Hathaway, is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max on August 21, offering viewers another opportunity to experience one of 2026’s notable original movies.

Anne Hathaway’s Mother Mary arrives on HBO Max next month

The movie, written and directed by David Lowery, centers on Anne Hathaway portraying a globally renowned pop star preparing for a highly anticipated comeback. The story intensifies as she reunites with her former best friend and longtime costume designer, Sam Anselm, played by Michaela Coel, which reopens past emotional wounds.

Unlike a conventional music industry drama, Mother Mary explores complex friendships, emotional trauma, and the personal sacrifices tied to fame and artistic creation. The cast also features Hunter Schafer, FKA twigs, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Alba Baptista, Atheena Frizzell, Isaura Barbé-Brown, and Sian Clifford in supporting roles.

David Lowery collaborated with producers Toby Halbrooks, Jeanie Igoe, James M. Johnston, Jonas Katzenstein, Maximilian Leo, and Jonathan Saubach to produce the film under the A24 label.

The film sparked considerable discussion, with Anne Hathaway’s performance and the movie’s distinctive visual approach receiving praise, although its unconventional narrative divided viewers.

Currently, Mother Mary holds a 70% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 5.5 out of 10 score on IMDb. Financially, the film earned approximately $3 million against a production budget of $20 million during its theatrical release, ranking it among A24’s lower-grossing titles this year.

With the upcoming debut on HBO Max, the film is positioned to reach a broader audience.
