Elon Musk Documentary Faces International Release Hurdles

A nearly four-hour documentary about Elon Musk, directed by Alex Gibney and titled Musk, faces uncertainty in its international theatrical release after Universal Pictures reportedly began reconsidering its distribution commitment. The Hollywood Reporter disclosed the development, which places the film’s overseas rollout in question.

The film premiered recently at the Venice Film Festival, where it received a four-minute standing ovation and strong early reviews. Bleecker Street remains scheduled to release the documentary in U.S. theaters on October 16, followed by an HBO Max debut.

Variety reports the film examines Musk’s business empire, political activities, personal relationships, and expanding public influence. Gibney commenced development of the project in 2023. Musk has publicly labeled the documentary a “hit piece” and criticized Gibney on X.

Interview subjects featured in the film include Errol Musk, Musk’s father; Justine Musk, his first wife; Martin Eberhard, Tesla co-founder; Reid Hoffman, LinkedIn co-founder; Geoffrey Hinton, AI researcher; and Ashley St. Clair. Musk himself declined Gibney’s request for an interview and did not participate.

What the documentary covers

Gibney characterizes the film as an examination of Musk’s ascent and the broadening scope of his influence. It addresses Musk’s relationship with Donald Trump, his political evolution, his ownership of X, and his leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.

At the Venice premiere, Gibney noted a “sense of fear” among individuals approached for interviews, with some declining to take part. Following the premiere, Musk described Gibney as having “ZERO integrity.” It remains unclear whether Musk has viewed the completed film.

The controversy surrounding the project has sustained public attention ahead of its U.S. theatrical launch. David Byrne contributed an original song to the documentary, which will be eligible for consideration at the 2027 Academy Awards.
