On August 31, Megyn Kelly described Michelle Obama as a “stone-cold sociopath” during an episode of The Megyn Kelly Show, asserting she felt “nothing for her children other than disdain” and criticizing her marriage to Barack Obama. The remarks triggered immediate public backlash.
Kelly made the comments while discussing modern parenting challenges with guest Jesse Kelly. She stated: “I was not aware she’s a sociopath who feels nothing for her children other than disdain. Oh, wait. I was kind of aware.” She went on to characterize Michelle as emotionally detached both as a spouse and parent, saying, “Obviously he’s the sentimental one between the two of them,” and adding, “I think the reason he was probably trying to hold it in was that he’s married to a stone-cold sociopath.”
Kelly urged the Obamas to divorce, saying, “Just get a divorce. The children are grown; get a divorce. Barack Obama would have no trouble finding someone who would actually love him, root for him, and have stars in her eyes for him. No trouble whatsoever. They should get a divorce. Honestly, it’s very clear they don’t love each other.”
Michelle Obama had spoken on August 26 about raising two adult daughters who had moved to Los Angeles after completing college. She noted they relocated to pursue careers and independent lives, and said she was enjoying greater personal freedom.
In July, Kelly had previously criticized Michelle Obama following her comments about the official portrait unveiled for the Obama Presidential Center. Michelle said the painting reflected her husband being comfortable with a “smart, challenging partner.” Kelly interpreted that statement as evidence Michelle “hated her husband” and “can’t stand him.”
Online users swiftly condemned Kelly’s remarks. One commenter wrote, “Bulls**t! She’s always happy and has two master’s degrees! Didn’t have to sleep with anyone to get ahead!! She can be seen in public laughing with George W, too. You’re f**king pathetic.” Another asked why Kelly was “so obsessed with other women,” adding that similar criticisms could be leveled at Kelly’s own public statements.
