An interview from 1999 has resurfaced in which Melania Trump rejected accusations that she married Donald Trump for financial gain. At the time of their marriage on January 22, 2005, Donald Trump was 58 years old and Melania was 34, marking a 24-year age difference between them.

Melania Trump Addresses Wealth Claims

In the 1999 ABC interview conducted shortly after Melania and Donald Trump publicly confirmed their relationship, Melania responded to questions about her motives. When asked about suggestions that she was a “gold digger,” she firmly denied the claim, stating, “You know, the people, they don’t know me.” She reiterated this by saying, “People who talk like this, they don’t know me.”

The interviewer pressed further by remarking, “Well, you don’t see many 26-year-old supermodels on the arm of a 53-year-old car mechanic.” Melania replied calmly, “You know what, you can’t sleep or to hug or to talk with beautiful things, with beautiful apartment, beautiful plane, beautiful cars, beautiful houses, you can’t do that.” The interviewer noted that such a life “could feel very empty.”

Emphasis on Independence

Melania stressed that anyone who believes she was with Donald Trump because of his wealth and fame does not truly know her. She has consistently highlighted her independence, including in a 2025 interview with Fox News. There, she described herself as highly “independent,” explaining that although people often see her as just the wife of the President, she holds her own beliefs and opinions and does not always agree with her husband, “and that’s OK.”
