Lightning Strike Kills One Swimmer, Injures Three at Florida Beach
A lightning strike at Fort Myers Beach, Florida, killed one person and injured three others during a swimming incident described as a nuclear explosion by witnesses.

A lightning strike at a Florida beach resulted in the death of one individual and injuries to three others, according to local officials. Witnesses described the event as resembling the explosion of a nuclear bomb.
WINK News reported that the incident occurred around 3 p.m. local time on Friday, when swimmers were in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico near Fort Myers Beach. The lightning directly struck one swimmer, a man whose identity has not been disclosed, causing his death.
Three additional swimmers who were nearby at the time of the strike sustained injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital. Scott Wirth, the fire chief of the Fort Myers Beach Fire District, confirmed these details.
Sarah Rodriguez from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office told the New York Post that the three injured individuals appear to be in stable condition.
Debra Crombie, who was present on the beach, described the moment to WINK News: "Suddenly, it looked like a nuclear bomb exploded. I saw the flash but couldn’t immediately tell where the lightning struck; I knew it hit the beach or the shoreline directly."
She added, "The light was so bright that our ears hurt and our eyes were blinded by its intensity. That’s how powerful it was."
Thunderstorms are expected to affect parts of the U.S. East Coast throughout the Fourth of July holiday, coinciding with a heat dome covering large areas of the country. Officials have warned beachgoers about potential safety risks. Despite the adverse weather, the beach remained open following the incident.
