During a fishing trip in Florida, an 11-year-old boy suffered a sudden alligator attack that resulted in the amputation of his right hand despite extensive medical efforts to save it. The incident occurred at Nelson Fishing Camp near the city of Omatilla in Marion County, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

The boy, identified by his family as Brody Terry, was fishing from the water’s edge when the alligator bit him. Local reports indicate that Brody was returning a caught fish to the water when the alligator unexpectedly struck. A family relative, Andrew Raines, recounted that the boy’s father jumped into the water to free him from the animal’s grasp and succeeded in driving the alligator away, although the injury was severe.

Brody was transported to a hospital where he underwent several surgeries, culminating in the amputation of his hand at the wrist. The FWC reported that one of its officers captured the alligator, which measured approximately 8 feet 7 inches in length.

The commission emphasized that the incident highlights the importance of following safety guidelines, including avoiding close contact with alligators, refraining from feeding them, and swimming only in designated areas during daylight hours. Despite the presence of alligators in some parts of Florida, serious injuries from attacks remain rare.

Brody is currently recovering at home after being discharged from the hospital, receiving support from his family and the local community.
