She lost all her hair to chemo, then realized this shocking truth
Shrika Panciroli, a 22-year-old content creator, shares her journey of embracing short hair after chemotherapy-induced hair loss.

A physical transformation became an unavoidable daily reality for Shrika Panciroli when she began losing her hair during medical treatment. The 22-year-old content creator recently detailed this experience in a TikTok video that has accumulated more than 6 million views since its initial posting in June.

Medical Context and Treatment Details
Panciroli, who was born in New Delhi, India, and currently resides in Reggio Emilia, Italy, underwent chemotherapy as part of a gene therapy regimen. This procedure addressed sickle cell disease associated with thalassemia, a genetic condition she has managed for nearly her entire life. She clarified that the chemotherapy served as conditioning to prepare her body for receiving treated cells.
The active phase of chemotherapy lasted four days, but Panciroli spent approximately 50 days in the hospital for overall treatment and recovery. She described the process as physically and emotionally demanding, requiring significant patience and strength. Hair loss began roughly one week to ten days after starting treatment, which she characterized as a "huge shock."
Emotional Impact and Identity Shift

"Day after day, I watched more and more of my hair fall out, and it felt like a waking nightmare," Panciroli stated. She reported crying frequently, experiencing scalp discomfort without relief, and barely recognizing herself in the mirror. For most of her life, she had associated her beauty specifically with her long, black hair, viewing it as a core component of her identity.

The visible nature of the hair loss made her illness feel more real, contrasting with previous internal experiences of the condition. According to the Cleveland Clinic, hair typically begins falling out within the first three weeks of chemotherapy. While some individuals may experience permanent loss, regrowth usually starts two to three months after treatment completion.
Embracing a New Perspective on Beauty
Panciroli decided to cut her hair before entering the hospital, marking a significant departure from her childhood style. As her hair slowly grew back into a short pixie-style cut, she adopted a mindset of curiosity rather than immediate comfort. She is currently learning to style the new look and appreciating this version of herself one day at a time.
Reflecting on the change, she noted that she did not realize how beautiful she was while having long hair. "It was only after losing it that I truly began to appreciate it," she explained. Panciroli is now working to believe compliments about her appearance with short hair, emphasizing that people should not wait until they lose something to recognize its value.
This journey has taught her ongoing lessons about beauty, identity, and self-acceptance. She continues to build confidence and adjust to seeing herself differently, finding renewed appreciation through the loss of her former hairstyle.
