‘Minions & Monsters’ Opens with $64.5M, Below Expectations Over July 4 Weekend
‘Minions & Monsters’ debuted with $64.5 million over the July 4 holiday, underperforming compared to projections and previous franchise openings.

The latest installment in the Despicable Me franchise, Minions & Monsters, launched with $64.5 million from Wednesday through the Fourth of July weekend, falling short of the anticipated $80 million five-day opening, according to Variety.
Despite the lower-than-expected domestic performance, the film did better internationally, earning $86 million over the weekend and totaling $98 million overseas so far. This brings the global box office total to $159.8 million.
Analysts had forecasted a slower box office weekend due to the holiday falling on a Saturday, though Toy Story 5 still managed to generate $31 million during the same period in its fifth weekend.
Comparatively, previous franchise entries opened significantly higher during the same five-day holiday stretch: 2022’s Minions: The Rise of Gru debuted with $123 million, and 2024’s Despicable Me 4 opened to $122 million.
Over the last twenty years, there have been seven movies in the Despicable Me series.
The new film tells “the rambunctious, ridiculous and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood, became movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world and then banded together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they had just created.”
Minions & Monsters features an ensemble cast providing voices for the new characters introduced in the movie.
