Unidentified high-top SUVs, built by Chinese firm Hongji, were spotted in President Donald Trump’s motorcade during his May visit to Beijing, sparking speculation about their role as mobile communications or electronic warfare platforms.

Several odd-looking Sport Utility Vehicles with prominent rooftop structures have turned up in President Donald Trump’s motorcade during his trip to China, generating widespread curiosity online. The vehicles, manufactured by a little-known company called Hongji, were first seen on Wednesday, May 13, in Beijing as Trump traveled to meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Social media footage quickly circulated, though their exact function remains unclear.

The U.S. Secret Service has confirmed it did not operate the SUVs, according to The War Zone (TWZ). However, the agency declined to say whether the vehicles belonged to the U.S. Embassy in China or to Chinese government services. The modified cars sit unusually low to the ground, suggesting they carry significant weight, likely from specialized equipment housed under the roof structures.

Speculation Over Rooftop Gear

Multiple units were observed in various positions within the motorcade, and they do not match any previously documented Chinese security vehicles, adding to the mystery. TWZ reports that the SUVs are probably disguised mobile communications platforms. They could also be equipped with electronic warfare (EW) tools, anti-drone systems, or serve as mobile command posts.

Among the possibilities, the most plausible role is as EW platforms capable of jamming drones, disrupting radio and GPS signals, and interfering with hostile communications. Such systems typically require large power supplies, cooling equipment, and antenna arrays—features that would explain the bulky roof additions. The vehicles underscore a broader shift in VIP protection, where traditional armored limousines are no longer sufficient against modern threats like drones, electronic surveillance, remote-triggered explosives, and loitering munitions.

Other Modified Vehicles in the Convoy

The motorcade also included a modified Lincoln Navigator fitted with mounted antennae, a sensor turret, and other rooftop structures. Little is publicly known about this vehicle, though speculation points to it acting as a mobile communications relay, surveillance platform, or EW support unit. A modified Chevrolet Suburban resembling U.S. presidential “Roadrunner” vehicles was also present, known to function as rolling communications hubs and command-and-control nodes.

A modified Ford E-Series transport was spotted as well. TWZ notes these are typically used as rapid response vehicles or counter-assault team transporters. They may also carry equipment or serve as mobile lighting and communications platforms, similar to those used by Chinese authorities for riot control. These vehicles featured cone-like roof structures likely housing antennae, sensors, RF emitters, or cameras, though their exact purpose remains unconfirmed.
