Portuguese Wildfire Threatens Three Villages, Injures Three Firefighters

A large-scale forest fire in the Arganil area of central Portugal continues to spread, threatening three villages and injuring three firefighters. Authorities have mobilized hundreds of personnel and vehicles in an effort to contain the blaze.

Fire Intensifies Amid Challenging Conditions

According to Carlos Tavares, head of the sub-regional civil protection command in Coimbra, the fire is “very intense.” Flames advanced under the influence of wind and difficult terrain. Civil protection authorities stated that safeguarding residents and homes remains their top priority.

Three Villages in the Fire’s Path

Civil protection officials confirmed that three villages—located in the area between Arganil and Góis—are now directly in the fire’s trajectory. The merging of several nearby fires contributed to increased intensity and greater difficulty in suppression efforts.

Operational Challenges for Firefighting Teams

Firefighting crews faced severe operational constraints due to the region’s topography, dense stands of eucalyptus and pine trees, thick scrubland, and strong winds that accelerated fire spread.

Injuries to Three Firefighters Reported

Three firefighters sustained injuries during suppression operations. Among them was the Arganil fire brigade commander, who was hospitalized following a vehicle-related incident during firefighting maneuvers. All reported injuries are classified as minor.

Portuguese media reports indicate that two of the injured firefighters suffered smoke inhalation. The Arganil fire commander was struck by a vehicle during maneuvers linked to fire suppression activities.

Massive Response Mobilized

Authorities deployed hundreds of firefighters and hundreds of vehicles. Later updates confirmed that more than 800 personnel participated in suppression efforts, supported by over 250 vehicles and aerial resources before nightfall.

Early Sunday morning Portuguese media reports noted that falling temperatures and rising humidity levels contributed to reduced fire intensity. Ground crews continue containment operations around the fire’s perimeter and attempt full control.
