The British parole committee has approved the release of Maria Pearson following her 39-year imprisonment, establishing her as the longest-serving female prisoner in the history of UK prisons. This decision has faced strong opposition from the victim's family.

Prior to this approval, nine previous requests for her release were denied due to her classification as a danger to society. However, the latest review determined a reduction in her risk level, permitting her release under strict monitoring conditions. These include wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet for an entire year and prohibitions on contacting the victim’s family or entering their residential area.

Details of the Crime and Sentencing

The case dates back to 1986 when Pearson was convicted of fatally stabbing Janet Newton, aged 23, seventeen times. The motive was jealousy, as Pearson believed Newton was responsible for ending her romantic relationship. In 1987, Pearson received a life sentence with a minimum term of 12 years.

Her nearly four decades in custody were linked to negative behavioral reports. She was twice transferred back from open prisons to closed facilities due to violations of rules and regulations.

Victim's Family Concerns

Throughout her imprisonment, Pearson consistently denied the crime and only partially admitted guilt in later stages. This has fueled the victim’s family’s outright rejection of the release decision.

Janet Newton’s sister, Lynn, expressed deep concern, citing official reports that indicate Pearson continues to suffer from psychological disorders related to resentment and distortion of reality. She warned that Pearson’s return to public life still poses a genuine threat to public safety.
