Google Gemini for Home Adds Camera-Based Smart Automation in 19 Countries
Google Gemini for Home now enables smart-home routines triggered by camera footage, available to early users in 19 countries starting May 27, 2026.

Starting May 27, 2026, early access users in 19 countries can activate smart-home automations through Google’s Gemini for Home by using security camera footage as triggers. This update allows Nest Cam and compatible Gemini Built-in cameras, including the onn Outdoor model, to initiate routines based on natural language descriptions of observed events.
Users no longer need to rely on fixed motion-zone rules; instead, they can describe scenarios such as "a package has been delivered" or "someone broke a window." Gemini’s scene understanding technology interprets the footage and executes linked routines, which may include turning on lights, activating alarms, sending notifications, or performing multiple actions sequentially. This functionality is powered by Gemini 3.1, which also introduces multi-step command handling to process complex requests more effectively, along with improved conversational phrasing recognition and enhanced timer and alarm management.
The update extends beyond camera features by adding Apple Music playback compatibility on Google Home speakers. Additionally, the Google Home app now simplifies enrolling faces into the Familiar Faces feature and allows users to submit feedback directly through the app interface.
However, advanced scene detection capabilities, such as identifying packages or broken glass, require a Google Home Premium subscription. In the United Kingdom, this subscription costs £8 per month for the Standard tier or £16 per month for the Advanced tier, with similar pricing structures applied in the United States. Users without a subscription retain access to basic motion alerts, but the more sophisticated camera automation features remain behind the paywall.
Currently, the automation feature supports only Nest Cam and select Gemini Built-in cameras; third-party devices are not yet compatible. Despite the feature’s announcement in autumn 2025, the Google Home Speaker has not received a confirmed release date in the UK or US, limiting hardware availability to complement the software enhancements.
While Google has confirmed the rollout across 19 countries, the specific list of supported nations has not been disclosed. Users participating in the Gemini for Home early access program should check the Google Home app’s camera settings to find the new automation options.
