Meta introduces a free gray verification badge on Facebook to confirm personal accounts belong to real individuals amid rising AI-generated content.

Meta has introduced a new gray verification badge called Facebook Verified, designed to enhance trust among users by confirming that personal Facebook accounts belong to real individuals. This initiative responds to the growing presence of content and accounts created using artificial intelligence technologies.
The rollout coincides with Facebook's increased use as a platform for buying and selling via Marketplace, dating through Facebook Dating, and participating in groups, where verifying the authenticity of users has become essential.
The verification process involves users submitting a short selfie video, which Facebook's systems compare against existing photos on the account to confirm identity consistency. Meta has emphasized that this verification is completely free and typically takes only a few minutes to complete. However, obtaining the badge requires meeting Facebook's trust and safety standards.
Meta clarified that the Facebook Verified badge is available to users who:
Currently, the badge is not available for Facebook Pages or accounts using Professional Mode.
Once verified, the gray badge will appear in key areas where users rely on the identity of others, including:
Meta also revealed plans to extend the badge's presence to posts appearing in the main Feed in the future.
The company confirmed that the verification service does not require any fees or subscriptions. Users only need to complete the verification process once for the badge to accompany their account across various Facebook sections.
The Facebook Verified badge signifies that the account belongs to a real person who has successfully completed the selfie verification and adheres to Meta's trust and safety standards. The badge aims to provide users with a quick indicator of authenticity before responding to Marketplace listings, accepting dates on Facebook Dating, or engaging within groups.
However, Meta stressed that the badge does not imply an endorsement or full guarantee of credibility by Facebook. All users remain subject to the platform's policies, including community standards and commerce regulations.
Meta concluded its announcement by highlighting that as artificial intelligence tools evolve and create increasingly convincing content and accounts, having a clear method to distinguish real individuals has become more crucial than ever. This objective underpins the launch of Facebook Verified.
