Meta is rolling out stricter 13+ content settings on Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger to limit unsuitable or repetitive material for teenage users worldwide.

Meta has initiated a global expansion of its 13+ account settings on Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, aiming to reshape the experience of teenage users by implementing stricter content controls similar to age-based classifications used in films. This approach is designed to reduce the exposure of younger users to inappropriate or repetitive content.
According to an announcement from Meta Newsroom, the company is also testing a new feature on Instagram that encourages teenagers to see a broader variety of content while limiting the excessive repetition of certain types of posts. Meta highlighted that an external evaluation confirmed these teen account settings are functioning as intended.
The 13+ settings are intended to tailor the content shown to teenage users more appropriately according to their age, moving beyond simply hiding specific types of content. Instead, the platform adjusts the algorithm’s content arrangement to prevent repeated exposure to the same kind of material, which can sometimes cause psychological stress or distort perceptions of body image, relationships, fame, or wealth.
To support this initiative, families are advised to take several steps: first, carefully verify the account age; second, activate parental supervision tools; third, monitor the topics Instagram suggests to the teenager; fourth, engage in conversations with their children about how algorithms work rather than relying solely on blocking content; and finally, apply stricter settings when encountering repetitive or disturbing content.
