Netflix expands its AI investments with a $600 million acquisition and launches INKubator, a studio combining generative AI and traditional animation production.

Netflix is accelerating its investment in artificial intelligence through a $600 million acquisition and the establishment of INKubator, a new studio dedicated to producing animation using generative AI technologies.
Recently unveiled as an experimental platform, INKubator blends generative AI tools with conventional production methods to create original content based on Netflix’s proprietary intellectual property. The studio currently focuses on short films and special releases using AI-supported production lines, with plans to expand into feature-length cinematic works.
The studio is led by a team combining expertise in entertainment and advanced technologies, with Serena Aire serving as Chief Operating Officer. Aire brings experience from companies including DreamWorks, A24, and MRC.
Netflix’s job postings related to INKubator reveal an ambition to build a hybrid production model that integrates traditional artists with AI specialists. The company is recruiting producers, 3D animators, software engineers, and technical directors proficient in industry-standard software such as Maya, Houdini, and Blender, alongside generative AI platforms like ComfyUI.
INKubator’s development is part of Netflix’s broader strategy to enhance its AI capabilities, following its March 2026 acquisition of InterPositive, a company specializing in AI-driven film production technologies co-founded by actor and producer Ben Affleck.
The acquisition deal is reported to be valued at up to $600 million, including cash payments and performance-based incentives. The InterPositive team of 16 employees has joined Netflix, while Affleck remains involved as a senior advisor.
InterPositive’s technology focuses on post-production tools such as removing unwanted elements from scenes, reframing shots, and improving lighting. INKubator aims to apply AI more extensively, incorporating it into early-stage visual content development and animation production.
Netflix’s job listings for positions in Los Angeles and Los Gatos highlight the studio’s ambitious hybrid approach. Open roles include producers, computer graphics artists, digital compositors, software engineers, technical directors, and a head of technology.
The role of “experimental computer graphics artist” underscores this direction, requiring candidates to master established industry software like Photoshop, Maya, Houdini, Harmony, and Blender, as well as the advanced visual programming tool ComfyUI.
The head of technology position emphasizes creating AI-driven workflows, advanced tools for artists, and scalable, secure environments to manage multiple projects. These efforts aim to accelerate INKubator’s creative ambitions as it transitions toward producing long-form content.
