"Renault 5" dethrones "Tesla" and tops electric car sales in France

The electric car market in France witnessed a radical shift during April 2026, as the "Renault 5" succeeded in clinching the sales lead by a wide margin over its competitor "Tesla Model Y," reflecting European companies regaining the initiative in their local market.

Sales figures: Sweeping dominance for the "Renault 5"

The "Renault 5" recorded exceptional performance during April, outperforming its closest competitors by double-digit figures, and the ranking of the top five according to the French site "Auto Plus" was as follows:

1. Renault 5: 3,418 units (first place).

2. Renault Scenic: 2,114 units.

3. Citroën ë-C3: 1,611 units.

4. Tesla Model Y: 1,456 units (dropped to fourth place).

5. Volkswagen ID.4: 1,216 units.

Note: Electric cars accounted for 26% of total new car sales in France during this month, with 36,200 registrations.

Factors behind Renault's success and Tesla's decline

Renault also managed to secure the annual lead so far with 13,502 units versus 12,126 for "Tesla." Experts attribute the Renault 5's superiority to:

• Design and price: The attractive design blending classic and modern elements with a competitive starting price of 25,000 euros.

• Government support: Its environmental classification grants it priority in French support and incentive programs.

• Variety of options: Strengthening its presence with complementary models such as the Renault 4 and Renault Twingo.

In contrast, "Tesla" was affected by fluctuations in delivery schedules and a loss of momentum after recent updates, leading to a decline in its April sales by a margin of 1,962 cars from the leader.

European dominance and timid Chinese attempts

The list showed clear dominance by European brands such as Peugeot, Skoda, Audi, and BMW. As for Chinese cars, despite their big ambitions, they remain far from the top ranks; the "Xpeng G6" came in 23rd place, and the "BYD Dolphin" in 39th place, indicating that Chinese competition has not yet reached the stage of a real threat to the lead in France.
