Recent polling shows more than four out of five participants on a live gaming podcast are ready to spend $100 for the standard edition of Grand Theft Auto VI. However, this enthusiasm contrasts with both official pricing hints from Take-Two Interactive and comprehensive consumer demand analysis.

Take-Two’s Pricing Strategy and Industry Context

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has maintained a clear stance against a $100 launch price, suggesting instead that the game will be priced between $70 and $80. A leaked UK retailer listing from May 12, though unconfirmed, supports this range by pricing the standard edition at £69.99, indicating a single version available at launch. This figure aligns with Zelnick’s stated ceiling and implies the final price will likely be closer to the lower end of the spectrum.

Industry experts have debated the potential for GTA VI to break the longstanding $70 standard price barrier, with some analysts from Bank of America arguing that exceeding $80 could set a precedent beneficial to the broader gaming market. Rockstar Games’ prominence makes it uniquely positioned to attempt such a move.

Consumer Research and Market Demand

The enthusiastic response from Insider Gaming’s podcast audience, which included about 500 viewers, offers a snapshot of gamer sentiment but lacks representativeness. In contrast, a more rigorous MIDiA Research study surveyed 2,000 consumers across the US and UK using a Gabor–Granger demand curve methodology. This research found that 59% of respondents would purchase GTA VI at $69.99, but interest declines sharply at prices above $70.

The study concluded that pricing the game at $69.99 maximizes overall revenue by maintaining a larger buyer base and facilitating sales of higher-tier editions such as Deluxe and Ultimate versions.

Release Timeline and Pricing Expectations

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Pre-orders are expected to begin between May 18 and 21, with official pricing details likely to be disclosed during Take-Two’s earnings call on May 21. Reports suggest up to six purchase options will be available, with the standard edition anticipated to cost approximately £69.99 in the UK and between $69.99 and $79.99 in the US.

This pricing represents a premium compared to current-generation titles but remains below the $100 threshold that some fans have indicated they would accept.
