WhatsApp Tests Self-Destructing Text Messages After Reading

WhatsApp is preparing to introduce a highly anticipated feature that enables users to send text messages that automatically vanish after being read a single time. This development follows years of the app offering disappearing photos, videos, and voice messages that are viewable only once, bringing WhatsApp closer to the capabilities of rival messaging platforms.

According to reports, this feature is currently undergoing extensive testing in WhatsApp’s beta versions on both iOS and Android systems. Users will have the option to select "send as a message read once" after composing their text, allowing the recipient to open and read the message only once before it disappears permanently from the chat.

The feature also promises an enhanced level of privacy by preventing recipients from copying, forwarding, or sharing the message with others. Additionally, WhatsApp is expected to block screenshot and screen recording functions while these messages are displayed to maintain confidentiality.

Self-destructing messages are already available on platforms such as Messenger, Instagram, Snapchat, and Telegram. Previously, WhatsApp users resorted to converting text into images and sending them with the "view once" option as a workaround.

The company has not yet announced an official launch date for this feature to all users. However, its advanced testing phase on Apple and Android devices suggests a potential wide release in the near future.

This new capability is anticipated to increase WhatsApp’s appeal among users who prefer sharing sensitive or temporary information with higher privacy and security standards.
