Why does the iPhone 18 Pro use a different 5G modem than the Pro Max?

Apple has deployed two distinct 5G modems across its 2026 flagship lineup — the in-house C2 in the iPhone 18 Pro and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 in the iPhone 18 Pro Max — marking the first time identical-generation Pro models use different baseband chips.

Apple has shipped the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max with divergent 5G modems: the iPhone 18 Pro uses Apple’s newly introduced C2 modem, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max contains Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80. This represents the first instance in iPhone history where two Pro-tier models launched simultaneously feature different baseband components.

The C2 modem debuted during Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event on September 9. It adds millimeter-wave (mmWave) 5G support — enabling peak download speeds up to 2Gbps — a capability absent in Apple’s earlier C1X modem. The C2 also consumes 15% less energy than the C1X.

Why mmWave remains limited in real-world use

Despite its speed advantage, mmWave 5G suffers from short signal range and poor building penetration. As a result, it is deployed only in high-density urban zones. Most U.S. wireless subscribers rely instead on mid-band 5G, which trades peak throughput for broader coverage and improved indoor performance.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max teardown by TechInsights confirmed the presence of the Snapdragon X80 5G modem. That device also includes Apple’s N1 custom network processor, designed for short-range connectivity including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The N1 replaced Broadcom’s component last year in the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Apple developed the N1 to deepen integration with iOS, enhancing reliability for features such as AirDrop and contributing to improved battery efficiency.

Core hardware inside the iPhone 18 Pro Max

The iPhone 18 Pro Max houses the A20 Pro application processor and 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM. Samsung serves as the primary memory supplier, with SK Hynix and Micron also providing memory components.

The iPhone 18 Pro contains Apple’s C2 5G modem. Unlike the Snapdragon X80 — a cross-platform chip compatible with both iOS and Android — the C2 was engineered specifically for the iPhone, delivering system-level advantages in latency, power management, and software coordination.

What’s next: the C3 “Prometheus” modem

Apple plans to introduce the C3 modem next year. Codenamed “Prometheus,” it is designed to surpass all competing 5G modems, including Qualcomm’s upcoming next-generation Snapdragon offering. The C3 will incorporate advanced AI capabilities and support for next-generation satellite networks.

A reference list clarifies modem deployment across recent iPhone models: the iPhone 16e uses the Apple C1; the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max use the Snapdragon X80; the iPhone Air and iPhone 17e use the C1X; and the iPhone 18 Pro now deploys the C2.
