Egypt secured a place in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup by beating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw after both regular and extra time. This victory marks a historic achievement for the Pharaohs, as it represents their first-ever knockout match win in World Cup finals.

In the upcoming round of 16 scheduled for July 7, Egypt will face the winner of the match between Argentina and Cape Verde.

Before the match, attention centered on Egypt’s captain Mohamed Salah, who had left the previous group stage game against Iran due to injury. Salah recovered and started in Egypt’s first knockout match in World Cup history.

Egypt began the match strongly, opening the scoring in the 13th minute. Following a cleverly executed free kick, Ahmed Hafez regained possession and delivered a cross to the far post, where Imam Ashour rose to head the ball into the Australian net, scoring his second goal of the tournament.

Australia had an early chance when Christian Volpato struck a powerful shot that hit the crossbar in the 4th minute. However, after Egypt’s goal, the team controlled the pace and minimized threats to their goal.

Zizo nearly doubled Egypt’s lead in the 21st minute, but the referee disallowed the attempt for offside. Australia managed only one shot on target in the first half through Aziz Behich.

At the start of the second half, Omar Marmoush came close to scoring a second goal for Egypt, with his shot narrowly missing the post.

Australia equalized in the 55th minute from a free kick delivered by Aiden O’Neill into the penalty area. Defender Harry Souttar rose to meet the ball, but Egypt’s defender Mohamed Hani inadvertently redirected it into his own net.

Mohamed Hani had suffered a heavy aerial collision with Souttar minutes before the own goal, raising questions about his physical and mental condition leading up to the mistake.

Hani had also scored an own goal against Belgium in the group stage and was involved in a strong aerial challenge with the nearly two-meter-tall Australian defender Souttar shortly before conceding the equalizer, which prompted concerns about his state during that sequence.

Following the equalizer, Egypt lost control of the match and retreated to defensive positions as Australia increased their attacking pressure.

Jackson Irvine nearly gave Australia the lead late in the game, but Egypt’s defense and goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir successfully prevented the goal.

With no further goals scored, the match proceeded to extra time, which was marked by cautious play and visible fatigue among players, who appeared more concerned with avoiding defeat than pursuing a win.

Mohamed Salah made a decisive contribution during extra time by delivering a precise left-footed cross to Rami Rabia, but Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach made a notable save to clear the ball.

Egypt maintained composure during the penalty shootout, converting all their attempts. Mohamed Salah stood out by executing the third penalty with a Panenka-style chip.

The extra time featured balanced play between two exhausted teams, with sporadic Egyptian attempts led by Haitham Hassan and Imam Ashour, but the outcome was ultimately decided by penalties.

Australia substituted veteran goalkeeper Matthew Ryan specifically for the shootout, but this strategy did not yield the desired result.

Australian captain Harry Souttar missed the first penalty by shooting over the crossbar, while Egypt successfully converted their first four penalties. Salah’s Panenka penalty was a highlight of the shootout.

Hossam Abdel Meguid scored the decisive penalty, securing a historic 4-2 shootout victory for Egypt and their unprecedented progression to the round of 16.

Despite moments of anxiety following their strong start, Egypt achieved their first knockout win in World Cup history and will continue their tournament journey awaiting the winner of the Argentina versus Cape Verde match in the round of 16.
