FIFA Clears Argentina Over "Falklands" Song Controversy After Egypt Match
FIFA confirmed no disciplinary action against Argentina following players' singing of a song referencing the Falklands after their win over Egypt in the 2026 World Cup.

The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) resolved its position on the controversy sparked by Argentina's celebrations after qualifying for the 2026 World Cup quarterfinals, stating it will not impose any disciplinary measures against the team regarding the chants players performed in the locker room after their victory over Egypt.
This decision followed the circulation of a video released by the Argentine Football Association on its official X platforms, showing players singing the "Fourth Star" song, which includes a reference to the Malvinas Islands—the name Argentina uses for the Falkland Islands.
Argentina reached the quarterfinals after one of the most remarkable comebacks in World Cup history. The defending champions trailed Egypt by two goals until the 78th minute and appeared close to elimination. Even after Cristian Romero scored to reduce the deficit, statistical models gave Argentina less than a 0.6% chance to advance.
However, the Argentine team displayed resilience, overturning the score with goals from and Enzo Fernández to secure a 3-2 win and continue their defense of the world title.
Controversy Surrounding the "Fourth Star" Song
The players' celebrations brought renewed attention to the "Fourth Star" song, which has become one of the most popular anthems among Argentine fans during the tournament.
The lyrics express the dream of winning a fourth world title and praise Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona. They also include a phrase referencing the Malvinas Islands, affirming their connection to Argentine national identity, a detail that attracted significant attention due to the historical sensitivity of the issue.
The dispute traces back to the 1982 Falklands War, a 74-day conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom over control of the islands in the South Atlantic Ocean.
The war resulted in the deaths of 649 Argentine soldiers and 255 British soldiers, leaving the issue as one of the most delicate topics in bilateral relations.
Enforcement of Regulations on Military Symbols
Although Argentina's team faced no sanctions, earlier in the tournament, rules were enforced against England's supporters. A group of fans was prohibited from bringing flags featuring a soldier's silhouette, deemed to carry military symbolism.
Additionally, some Barrow club supporters were barred from displaying a flag bearing a submarine image, consistent with regulations banning military images or weapon symbols inside stadiums.
Potential Quarterfinal Matchup Between Argentina and England
The quarterfinal results could set up a highly anticipated encounter between Argentina and England. Argentina is scheduled to face Switzerland, while England will play against Norway.
