The match between Morocco and the Netherlands began with both teams maintaining a balanced pace, resulting in a goalless first half.
The Netherlands took the lead in the 72nd minute through a goal by Cody Gakpo.
Morocco responded resiliently, with Issa Diop scoring a header in the first minute of added time (90+1) following a precise cross from Shamseddine Talbi to equalize.
Extra time did not produce any goals despite Morocco’s dominance and multiple missed chances, including a notable opportunity by Sofyan Rahimi, which was skillfully saved by goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
The match proceeded to a penalty shootout, where Morocco prevailed 3-2 to secure the win.
This victory sets up a round of 16 encounter between Morocco and Canada, while the Netherlands exits the tournament.
Morocco also achieved a historic milestone by playing its 27th match in World Cup finals, becoming the African and Arab team with the most appearances, surpassing Cameroon’s previous record.
