The 2026 FIFA World Cup has recorded an exceptional start both on and off the field, as the opening matches involving the three host nations—Canada, Mexico, and the United States—achieved unprecedented television viewership figures across North America.

On Wednesday, the official FIFA website released statistics confirming that over 54 million people watched the host countries’ teams during the tournament’s opening round, signaling the event’s strong ability to unite fans and draw viewers across the continent.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino described the tournament as a historic event by all measures. He highlighted that the United States’ match against Paraguay became the most-watched World Cup broadcast in U.S. history. More than 54 million viewers followed the opening matches of Canada, Mexico, and the United States, contributing to breaking numerous records.

Infantino stated, “These numbers reflect the significant status this tournament holds for these countries, the continent, and the entire world.” He emphasized that the impact goes beyond statistics, involving millions worldwide coming together around football in atmospheres filled with passion, energy, and excitement—whether inside packed stadiums, in front of television screens, or during street celebrations.

Record Viewership in the United States

The United States achieved its highest television viewership in World Cup history, with its opening victory over Paraguay drawing an average of 27.5 million viewers across Fox and Telemundo networks. This made the match the most-watched World Cup broadcast ever in the U.S.

Fox recorded the highest English-language TV viewership for a men’s World Cup match in the United States, alongside the highest digital viewership for a U.S. team match in the tournament’s history.

Meanwhile, Telemundo registered the highest Spanish-language viewership for a U.S. team World Cup match, as well as the largest audience for a group stage match without Mexico’s participation in U.S. Spanish-language broadcasts.

Mexico’s Strong Opening Impact

Mexico’s national team also made a strong impression both on the pitch and in viewership. Their opening win against South Africa averaged 23.4 million viewers, becoming the most-watched World Cup match in Mexico during the 21st century.

The television market share for the match reached 72.1%, indicating that nearly three out of every four TV viewers in Mexico watched the Mexican team’s opening game.

Additionally, the match attracted about 20 million viewers in the United States, where Telemundo achieved its highest Spanish-language viewership for a World Cup opening match in U.S. television history.

Growing Enthusiasm in Canada

In Canada, the national team’s opening match against Bosnia and Herzegovina reflected rising fan enthusiasm for the tournament. It averaged 3.1 million viewers across English- and French-language channels, making it the third most-watched men’s World Cup match involving Canada in the 21st century.

These record-breaking figures underscore the exceptional engagement generated by the 2026 World Cup, fueled by the strong support of fans from the three host nations in a tournament that has already begun to make history both inside stadiums and beyond.
