Portugal Coach Responds to João Neves' Comments About Cristiano Ronaldo
Portugal coach Roberto Martínez addressed João Neves' remarks on Cristiano Ronaldo, clarifying the player's importance amid public backlash.

João Neves made comments to the media after scoring Portugal's only goal in a recent match, stating that while everyone recognizes Cristiano Ronaldo's contributions to the national team and football, Ronaldo is currently "not different from the others." Neves added, "He is just another player on the team who helps the group, just like all the other players. He is here to contribute like all of us."
These remarks sparked widespread anger among Ronaldo's fans, who demanded respect for the Portuguese captain. The criticism extended beyond Neves to several national team players, with supporters arguing that some teammates do not provide Ronaldo with sufficient support on the field, whether through weak passing or failing to utilize him effectively.
Portuguese fans circulated a video clip stating, "The whole team should apologize to Ronaldo for their failure with him." Additionally, Ronaldo's supporters shared videos comparing how Argentine national team players interact with their captain versus what they perceive as less cooperative treatment from Portuguese teammates towards Ronaldo, intensifying the debate on social media platforms.
Coach Roberto Martínez Clarifies Neves' Statement
In response to a reporter's question about Neves' remarks, Spanish coach Roberto Martínez commented, "I think that statement can be easily misunderstood. Cristiano Ronaldo's status in this team cannot be diminished. We are talking about one of the greatest footballers in history. He has achieved everything. He has scored more goals for Portugal than any other player, broken countless records, and continues to fight for this country."
Martínez continued, "When people hear comments like these, it might lead them to question the player's mindset, his understanding of the locker room atmosphere, and even his values. However, I also understand what João was trying to say. I don't believe he intended any insult. What he was trying to express is that Portugal's goal is bigger than any individual."
The coach emphasized, "Nevertheless, this should never reduce Cristiano Ronaldo's stature within the national team. His impact, leadership, experience, and commitment are irreplaceable. Cristiano Ronaldo is not just an ordinary player. He is a symbol of Portugal and of football. Every player on this team fully understands what he represents."
