During the opening match of the 2026 World Cup between Egypt and Belgium held on Monday, referee Ramon Abati committed a significant error.

The game concluded in a 1-1 draw, with Egypt taking the lead in the 21st minute through Imam Ashour, who struck a powerful shot from 20 yards into the lower corner of Thibaut Courtois's goal.

Belgium's equalizer came in the 66th minute when Egypt defender Mohamed Hany inadvertently deflected a low cross from Thomas Meunier into his own net while under pressure from substitute Romelu Lukaku.

The seven-time African champions held firm in the final moments to avoid defeat.

BBC criticized the referee for allowing the free kick that resulted in Belgium's equalizing goal to be taken improperly.

According to the broadcaster, "The goal originated from a free kick awarded after a foul on Youri Tielemans in Belgium's half."

It added, "Belgium players advanced 14 yards before the free kick was taken, catching Egypt's defense off guard."

BBC also noted that Egypt's players "lost their focus" due to this serious mistake by the match official.
