World Cup 2026
The US has relaxed travel constraints for Iran's football team before their upcoming match against Egypt in Seattle during the World Cup group stage.

A spokesperson for the US Department of State confirmed that the Iranian national football team must still depart following their match scheduled for Friday evening Seattle time. This game is part of the final third round of Group G in the World Cup group stage hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The Iranian Football Federation’s spokesperson stated that the team will leave its training camp in Tijuana, Mexico, heading to Seattle on Wednesday.
Andrew Giuliani, the executive director of the White House task force on FIFA, told the Associated Press, "This was planned on our side. We intended to monitor the first two flights, and if they proceeded smoothly, we would extend the additional day due to the long travel time."
The policy change was first reported by NBC News amid ongoing negotiations between officials from both countries on how to end the conflict in Iran.
The Iranian team has expressed grievances regarding the travel restrictions imposed on them and the difficulties encountered since the outbreak of the war.
In March, Iran attempted to relocate its World Cup group stage matches to Mexico, a country with which it maintains diplomatic relations, but FIFA rejected this request.
However, the team’s request to move its training camp from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana was approved two weeks before Iran’s arrival, although many team officials and technical staff members were barred from traveling to the United States with the squad.
During Iran’s first two matches near Los Angeles, the team was only allowed to travel one day in advance.
Iran’s head coach, Amir Ghalenoei, repeatedly stated that these restrictions harmed the team, especially with less than 24 hours remaining before their matches against New Zealand and Belgium, which ended in 2-2 and 0-0 draws, respectively.
It remains unclear whether Iran’s next opponent, Egypt, will be permitted to arrive in Seattle two days before their match.
Following Egypt’s historic 3-1 victory over New Zealand in the group’s second round, the Egyptian team requested direct travel to Seattle, but FIFA denied the request, citing insufficient security resources to accommodate the urgent demand.
Egypt returned to its training camp in Spokane, Washington, located approximately a 45-minute flight from Seattle. No immediate comment has been issued regarding the travel request denial.
