The United States sold two seized oil tankers—Era and Lileo—linked to Russia to GMS Ship Recycling for dismantling in Alang, India, following judicial approval and Treasury Department exemptions.

The United States has sold the oil tankers Era and Lileo—both seized under sanctions enforcement actions—to GMS Ship Recycling, a company specializing in vessel recycling, for dismantling in Alang, India, according to Lloyd’s List.
The sale followed judicial authorization and specific exemptions issued by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Despite formal seizure, banks, insurers, and service providers expressed reluctance to engage with the vessels, underscoring persistent operational challenges associated with sanctioned ships even after confiscation.
The enforcement action that led to the seizure of Era and Lileo formed part of a broader U.S. sanctions enforcement effort targeting Venezuelan oil exports and ownership structures that U.S. authorities alleged were connected to Russia. The tanker Era was pursued across the Atlantic Ocean before being seized.
According to Lloyd’s List, the sale of Era and Lileo concludes the sanctions-related case involving the two vessels. Authorities had encountered difficulties managing the ships throughout the period due to the restrictions imposed on them.
