Yamal Aims Higher and Praises Julian Alvarez as Ideal for Barcelona

Lamin Yamal, the young Spanish footballer, expressed dissatisfaction with his current performance at the 2026 World Cup, stating that he has much more to offer in the upcoming knockout stages.

He also addressed the possibility of Argentine striker Julian Alvarez joining Barcelona, describing Alvarez as an ideal fit for the Catalan club's playing style.

In an exclusive interview with the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Yamal explained that he holds himself to a strict standard and is not satisfied with his current displays on the field. He said, "I am certain I can perform at a higher level. What I am showing now does not satisfy my ambition, and I have not yet reached my goals with either Barcelona or the national team."

The 18-year-old attributed this to his ongoing recovery from an injury that sidelined him for nearly two months, emphasizing that the forthcoming matches will showcase his best version as the World Cup enters its most decisive phase.

Yamal added that the full confidence shown by the Spanish national team’s coaching staff does not create pressure for him but rather serves as strong motivation. He also mentioned that he handles criticism calmly and focuses solely on improving his skills.

Regarding Spain's World Cup journey, Yamal noted that the valuable victory over Portugal gave the team a significant morale boost ahead of their quarterfinal clash with Belgium. However, he stressed the importance of moving past that win and concentrating on the next match. He highlighted that his main objective goes beyond scoring goals to making a difference and supporting the team both offensively and defensively.

Yamal also expressed admiration for Lionel Messi’s performance in the tournament, calling it "amazing." He praised Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo as well, stating that this generation of football legends serves as an inspiring example for him and other young players.

Concluding the interview, Yamal spoke about reports linking Julian Alvarez with Barcelona, saying, "Alvarez is a player any club in the world would aspire to have. I would be extremely happy if this deal happens because he possesses the technical qualities that perfectly align with Barcelona’s identity and style of play."
