Russia's Defense Ministry announced Lieutenant General Alexander Chaiko as the new head of the Russian Aerospace Forces, appointed last month by President Vladimir Putin.

The Russian Ministry of Defense declared on Thursday the appointment of Lieutenant General Alexander Chaiko, the former commander of Russian forces in Syria, as the leader of the Russian Aerospace Forces.
According to a ministry statement, Chaiko was assigned to this position last month through a decree issued by President Vladimir Putin.
Previously, Chaiko served as the deputy chief of staff of the Russian Armed Forces.
The ministry detailed that Chaiko led the Russian military contingent in Syria for nearly a year. This force has been deployed since 2015 following a request from former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who sought Russian support after being ousted from power.
In addition to his role in Syria, Chaiko also commanded Russian forces in the eastern region of the country.
Separately, Russia is considering restructuring its military facilities in Syria.
