Axios, citing sources, reported that U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to meet with leaders of Gulf countries on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday to discuss next steps in the war with Iran.

Axios said the meeting will focus on "American ideas about a post-war strategy, as Trump and his senior team work on a plan for the 'day after,' which is expected to receive final touches after the midterm elections.

Trump reiterated that Iran wants to reach an agreement with the United States to end the war, calling the conflict possibly near its "final stages."

When asked by CNN about further details on negotiations with Iran, Trump said: "We hope we are getting close to the end of the war. They want to make a deal, and we'll see how it goes... Iran really wants to make a deal," according to his words.

Trump clarified that Iran is suffering "devastating losses" and is eager to reach an agreement, emphasizing that Washington is capable of concluding a deal with Iran "at any time we want."

He stressed that Iran "will not have a nuclear weapon," asserting that "everything there has been destroyed," and that its navy "is at the bottom of the Gulf."

He said the war with Iran is approaching its end because "it can't continue after everything has been destroyed."
