Brazilian authorities ordered the evacuation of around 150 individuals following a large-scale fire and subsequent series of explosions at a chemical manufacturing facility in Itaquaquecetuba, part of Greater São Paulo.

The fire broke out at approximately 3 p.m. local time yesterday, prompting an immediate and extensive firefighting operation. More than 60 firefighters and 30 fire engines were deployed to contain the rapidly spreading blaze.

Video footage and photographs from the scene captured massive flames and dense, dark smoke columns rising over 30 meters into the sky. Authorities confirmed “multiple explosions” occurred on-site; recordings showed chemical drums being hurled into the air due to intense pressure generated by burning materials.

Infrastructure damage and secondary incidents

The fire affected surrounding infrastructure, with thick smoke surging forcefully from sewer openings. In one dramatic incident, pressure from the blaze caused a manhole cover to explode upward, striking a passerby and causing him to fall to the ground, according to local media reports.

Hazards complicating containment efforts

Fire suppression operations are highly complex and dangerous due to the presence of 24 solvent storage tanks inside the facility, continuously feeding the fire. Additionally, the plant is located within an industrial zone containing highly volatile and flammable chemicals—factors that significantly increase the risk of further explosions and hinder containment efforts.

To date, authorities have not reported any fatalities or injuries beyond the single incident involving the fallen passerby.
