Clayton to Assume Director of National Intelligence Role Monday

Bill Bult, the acting U.S. Director of National Intelligence, announced on Saturday that Jay Clayton will officially begin his duties as Director of National Intelligence on Monday.

In a social media post, Bult stated: “After speaking with President Trump and Jay Clayton, we have decided that the transition for the Director of National Intelligence position will take place next Monday.”

Bult added: “I am deeply grateful to President Trump for the opportunity to serve as Director of National Intelligence during his historic declassification efforts and the reorganization of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.”

He continued: “I have no doubt that Jay will do an outstanding job. I have offered him my full and unwavering support as he transitions into leadership of this distinguished agency!”

Clayton’s background and confirmation

Clayton previously served as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. He will oversee the 18 U.S. intelligence agencies.

The U.S. Senate confirmed Clayton’s appointment in recent days, with Republican senators providing the majority vote despite Democratic opposition. The confirmation session was marked by tension.

Predecessor’s departure

The position had been vacant since June, following the resignation of Tulsi Gabbard. Her tenure was characterized by sharp disagreements with Democratic members of Congress, who accused her of advancing President Donald Trump’s political agenda and promoting election-related claims later proven false.
