The last hours witnessed new military skirmishes between the United States and Iran, involving an exchange of attacks, while both sides negotiate a deal to end the war.
America launched a first strike it described as "defensive" against Iran on Monday, which Tehran considered a violation of the fragile ceasefire between the two countries, while the US Central Command said the targets included boats attempting to lay mines and missile launch sites.
A senior official revealed to the "Axios" website that a new skirmish occurred at dawn on Thursday, the second of its kind within 48 hours, during which the Iranian army launched 4 attack drones at a US Navy vessel and another commercial ship.
The official explained that the US military responded by shooting down the drones launched by Iran, in addition to attacking another Iranian drone launch unit on the ground earlier.
For its part, "Fox News" reported, citing two officials, that "US forces shot down 4 Iranian one-way attack drones that were posing a threat in the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz."
The two officials added that US forces targeted an Iranian ground control station in the Iranian city of "Bandar Abbas" that was about to launch a fifth drone.
The two officials confirmed to the American network that "these operations are calculated, purely defensive, and aimed at maintaining the ceasefire," according to them.
In contrast, "Tasnim" news agency quoted a military source as saying that "hours earlier, an American oil tanker intended to cross the Strait of Hormuz after turning off its radar system."
The Iranian military source added that "the swift and decisive movement of the Iranian navy and its firing towards it forced it to stop and return," as he claimed.
Iranian reports earlier spoke of hearing the sound of 3 strong explosions that shook the eastern parts of the city of "Bandar Abbas," amid news of the activation of Iranian air defenses for a brief period.
These skirmishes came hours after US President Donald Trump's statement, in a cabinet meeting, that he is "in no hurry to reach an agreement" with Iran.
Trump said: "I don't care about the midterm elections. Look what happened last night, it was a prelude to the midterm elections. People understand that," according to him.
Trump was referring to candidates he endorsed who won in the primary elections, including Ken Paxton, the Attorney General of Texas, who defeated Senator John Cornyn in the Republican Senate primary runoff.
Trump pointed out that Tehran believes it can procrastinate and be more patient than him due to the upcoming midterm elections, stressing that he is "not interested" in those elections, as he put it.
Concurrently, Senator Lindsey Graham wrote a post on the "X" platform saying: "I greatly appreciate President Trump's desire to end the Iranian conflict with a real and sustainable diplomatic solution, and I have full confidence in the President and his team to achieve this common goal."
In contrast, the "Fars" news agency quoted a member of the Iranian negotiating team as saying that "some issues remain unresolved, and there will be no agreement as long as all matters concerning Iran are not resolved."
The Iranian official touched on reports about the US President's intention to unilaterally announce a peace agreement, saying that "if these issues are fully resolved, Iran will officially announce the result."
For its part, "Tasnim" agency, close to the Iranian "Revolutionary Guard," confirmed that "there are still differences over some clauses, words, and phrases," while stressing that "the exchange of messages is still ongoing."
It emphasized that "if the memorandum of understanding is finally approved after settling the existing differences, it should be announced jointly and by consensus, while a unilateral announcement by America may be completely inaccurate."
