EU Plans New Sanctions Package Against Russia Amid Ukraine Defense Boost
The European Commission intends to impose a new sanctions package on Russia while emphasizing urgent support for Ukraine's air defense capabilities.

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, stated that Ukraine urgently requires reinforcement of its air defense systems, highlighting that this issue will be addressed at the upcoming NATO summit.
She added that the European Union aims to finalize an agreement on the twenty-first sanctions package against Russia within the coming days.
Von der Leyen pointed out that the Russian air raids on Kyiv clearly demonstrate the critical need to strengthen Ukraine's air defense capabilities.
EU leaders agreed to extend the sanctions imposed on Russia due to its war against Ukraine for a period of 12 months.
This decision, reached during a summit held in Brussels, marks the first time that sanctions targeting specific sectors of the Russian economy have been extended for a full year, whereas previously these sanctions were renewed every six months.
In a related development, the Group of Seven (G7) issued a statement confirming plans to intensify sanctions against Russia, including measures targeting the oil and gas sectors. This will coincide with increased supplies of air defense capabilities, additional systems, interceptor missiles, and long-range weapons to Ukraine.
The G7, consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, noted that this additional support is based on what it described as renewed momentum achieved by Ukraine due to the progress made by its forces on the battlefield in recent months.
