A French passenger evacuated from the MV Hondius has tested positive for hantavirus, with 22 close contacts identified in France.

France’s Health Minister Stéphanie Rist announced on Monday that a female French passenger evacuated from the cruise ship MV Hondius has tested positive for hantavirus. The minister confirmed that 22 people who had close contact with the patient are now being monitored within France.
Of the five French nationals brought back to Paris and placed in quarantine, Rist told radio station France Inter that one woman’s condition “unfortunately deteriorated overnight” before tests confirmed the infection, according to AFP.
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is scheduled to hold a new meeting later Monday afternoon to discuss the evolving situation.
On Sunday, Spain’s health minister stated that the final two evacuation flights for passengers from the cruise ship—which has been docked near Tenerife following a deadly hantavirus outbreak—would depart Monday afternoon. So far, 94 passengers have been evacuated.
Officials said Australia is organizing a flight to transport six passengers, while New Zealand is arranging one for 18. These flights will also carry passengers from other countries that have not sent their own evacuation missions, according to Reuters.
The World Health Organization reported on Friday that eight people have fallen ill, including three who died: a Dutch couple and a German national. The WHO confirmed that six of the eight cases have been laboratory-confirmed as hantavirus, with two others still suspected.
