President Donald Trump welcomed the far-right's victory in Germany's Saxony-Anhalt state election on Sunday, calling it a "very good evening" for the populist party, referring to the Alternative for Germany (AfD), which secured a clear lead in local election results.

On his social media platform "Truth Social," Trump wrote: "Wow! The populist party in Germany had a very good evening. They’ve finally had enough of the terrible migration rules that have caused serious damage to Germany. They’re seeing strong growth now and won’t let anyone dismiss them anymore!"

The AfD’s overwhelming win in Sunday’s Saxony-Anhalt state elections sparked mixed reactions across Europe, with celebrations from right-wing populist forces and sharp condemnation from Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, reflecting deepening divisions between Europe’s political establishment and populist-nationalist movements.

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) secured 43.8% of the vote—more than double the share it achieved five years ago in the state, home to 2.1 million people west of Berlin.

The party significantly outpaced the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, which received 17.2% of the vote and lost nearly half its supporters, winning only 15 seats.
